My Hopes for the Solo movie

We’ve had a few glimpses into the Solo film that look pretty interesting.  Here’s what I’d hope to see (whether it’s likely or not).

“You lost today kid.”

Beckett feels very much like the proto-Indiana Jones that Indy encountered in his first adventure at the beginning of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.  But perhaps, this character, would be mixed with Walter Donovon who cautioned Indy “Don’t Trust Anybody”.  We hear a similar quote in the latest Solo trailer.  And that’s interesting.

Kessel Run

It seems pretty likely that we’ll get to see the Kessel run and why Han is so proud of making the run faster than anyone else.  My guess is that some of the scenes with the large tenticle creatures is the Kessel run.  But who knows.

And just since we’re on it, let’s get another space monster in Star Wars.  The space slug from The Empire Strikes back was really the only one we’ve gotten.  I hope this giant space tentacle/squid makes a big impact.

“I made a lot of special modifications myself”

The Falcon looks clean, well-built, and new in the Solo trailers.  So… WTF Happened?!  What did Han do to this thing?  I hope we get some kind of an explanation.

“Wookies are known to do that

We were a bit cheated out of a scene from The Force Awakens showed Chewie ripping off Unkar Plutt’s arm in Mas Kanata’s cantina.  It still happens in the novelization so it’s technically still canon.  But if we don’t get a scene of chewie ripping some’s arm out of their socket for losing, then this film will forever be known not to live up to expectations.

“It’s all a lot of simple tricks and non-sense”

One thing I really like about Anthology films has been the opportunity to gather a greater sense of the universe that the main saga films often move too fast to delve into.  With Rogue One, we got a great sense of the power and politics within the Empire.  We got to see the conflict and moral ambiguity  (and tenuousness) within the Rebel Alliance. If nothing else, Rogue One – and hopefully Solo – will fill this dimension to the overall Star Wars Saga.

I’m hoping we get to see a bit about why Han Solo doesn’t believe in “a mystical energy field that that controls [his] destiny”.  This was an important character arc for Solo in A New Hope – going from skeptic to him wishing Luke “May the Force Be With You”.  We even have him tell us this himself in The Force Awakens:

So what “simple tricks and nonsense” and “mumbo jumbo” has he witnessed that merit his skepticism?  From who?

Not My Han Solo

What I think I hope most for in Solo is that we get a “true” depiction of Han Solo the character and not what fans *think* Han Solo should be like.  Han Solo is selfish and unreliable.  He’s not funny – Harrison Ford is just a great charismatic actor that made his selfishness funny.  This is an important distinction.  Him saying “I have a good feeling about this” in the Solo trailer seems familiar with hearing him say “Hey… it’s me” in Return of the Jedi or “what was the second time?” in TFA.  The Kasdans know this character intimately and I want to make sure they stay true to that character (not to self-centered fans).
