Speculation on The Force Awakens plot

So I’ve only seen the second trailer for The Force Awakens a hundred or so times and it’s still not old.  But even the first time I saw it, there are a lot of messages or clues about the plot of the film.  We’re in the fleeting moments before the film comes out and we know exactly what it’s about.  So sometime it’s fun to see if some of the clues from the trailers match what is shown in the theater.  So let’s look at a few things that jump out that let our minds speculate about this film.

There is another Skywalker

The emotional core of this trailer is the narration of Luke Skywalker with the slightly modified lines from Return of the Jedi.  “The force runs strong in my family… you have that power too.”

Who is he talking about?  The implications are that someone in the (new) main cast is related to Luke.  In this case, it’s probably a son/daughter/niece/nephew.

There are a few options:

  • Ray – this is probable, but not certain.
  • Kylo Ren – we know the Skywalkers can have a crazy mean streak.  So the bad guy isn’t off the table.

Could also be both.  The familial ties between Luke and Leia was a huge subtext to the Original Trilogy.  But the father/son conflict has been done.  This would be a great dynamic.

But we also don’t know how or if Luke took to things like having families – or at least having children.  (Frankly, we don’t know if Obi-wan stayed on the celibacy/no attachments  program either).

My guess: Ray is a Skywalker and Kylo Ren is a Solo.  And Finn is also force sensitive.

Vader Relics

The trailer also shows a number of shots related to Vader.  We see the burned “skull” of Vader’s helmet.  We also see Anakin Skywalker’s (or Vaders which was very similar) light saber being passed along – though not clear between who.

We even see R2-D2 next to a hooded figure with a seemingly bionic hand.  The presumption is that it’s Luke (it probably is).  But what if it’s not?  R2-D2 was Anakin’s droid too.

We are also told that Maz Kanata’s character is a gangster who is probably the one handing the light saber to… someone.

So all this boils into some notion that someone is hunting Vader artifacts.  But who?  My bet is that Kylo Ren and/or the leaders of the First Order (that’s the name of what’s left of the Empire) are somehow enamored with Vader and these relics hold some kind of spiritual meaning.

New Sides

In the Prequels, we had The Republic vs The Separatists.  In the Original Trilogy we had The Empire vs The Rebel Alliance.  So for this new trilogy, we will have The First Order (bad) vs The Resistance (good).

It’s not clear of the nature of these groups other than the First Order has some connection to The Empire and The Resistance is kind of like the Rebel Alliance.  But there may also be other parties involved.  Usually when a dictatorship falls, there’s a scramble for power among other somewhat powerful groups.  Are these the only two or are there more?  It would be great if there was a broader menagerie and The First Order is gaining momentum while more democratic groups are falling.

New Heroes

We know we have new heroes in this film.

  • Finn – A storm trooper who seems to be having some deep thoughts on his future with The First Order
  • Ray – A junk collector on Jakku who… collects junk.
  • Poe Dameron – The best X-Wing Pilot in the galaxy.
  • BB-8 – An amazing ball droid that’s NOT computer generated

Each of them collide with each other in a pretty dramatic way – so we’re told.  But usually these things occur as a means of unfolding a plot.  Ultimately the intersection between these three characters will be the critical point to the overall plot.

I have no speculation on it at the moment, but it would seem that Finn is escaping something, Ridley helps him, and Poe perhaps protects them or ushers them into a larger family (The Resistence).

… and some new villains

We also have new villains and we don’t know as much about them.

  • Supreme Commander Snoke – probably the small guy in the photo.  This is an alien character as the actor will have a CGI face.
  • Captain Phasma – that chrome storm trooper
  • Kylo Ren – Force bad guy with wacky light saber

A Hidden Enemy

Always two there are.  No more.  No less.  A master and an apprentice.

We know of Kylo Ren.  So who else is there?

My guess (and I’ve seen other rumors to this end) is that it’s Darth Plagueis The Wise.  In Episode III, the Emperor goes on and on about how powerful Plagueis was and how he could create life…. And then he killed him in his sleep.  Really?

It would seem to me that a Sith Lord who figured out how to create life would figure out how to survive a sleep attack by his apprentice.

And Darth Plagueis is canon.  And we don’t know of any other Sith Lords when the two that were running around died in the same battle.

My thoughts – Supreme Commander Snoke (a CGI, alien character) is Plagueis and is using Kylo Ren as an apprentice.  He’s collecting Vader artifacts in order to bring him back to life, but this time without all that redemptive goodness.  This is, of course, the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark mixed with Harry Potter.   And I’m ok with that, but it better be awesome.
