Disney Announces more Star Wars coming

Disney has made some big Star Wars related announcements at their annual shareholders meeting this morning.  In short there’s a lot more Star Wars coming in the next two years.  Here’s summary:

“Here’s where the fun begins” ~ Han Solo

Star Wars Episode VIII, opening May 26, 2017

May is a much more appropriate release date for Star Wars films.  This is 1 day after the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars.  The film will be written and directed by  Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick, The Brothers Bloom).   So… no J.J.?  Very interesting.  Having different writers/directors for the original trilogy worked out, so I’ll reserve some skepticism, especially since we haven’t seen what J.J. can really do with Ep7 yet.

Star Wars: Rogue One, the franchise’s first spin-off film, starring Felicity Jones and opening December 16, 2016

The film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz).

So that’s three Star Wars movies (including Ep7) in the next 2 years.
